Re: Meanwhile...
I have been in Kew Gardens all day, wondering at the amazing tangly glass works by Dale Chihuly. They are absolutely beautiful anyway, but in that setting they take on all sorts of extra aspects. There's an exhibition of his earlier and less well-known work, along with a film of things being made -...

Re: TV/Streaming shows
Being in the blessed position of only having watched S2E1 so far, we are a bit bemused by all the people who are saying it's not a patch on the first series - E1 seemed pretty as much good as most of S1 to us.

Re: Bollocks to Brexit
For what it's worth I think we're a very long way from that - not least because he wouldn't have the balls to completely suspend democracy, and doesn't have the numbers in parliament to do it via a democratic coup. As Hong Kong is proving, in the era of instant communications even extremely authori...

We occupy that niche of people who watch it on iplayer not live, but only watch it after the episode in question has been broadcast.Sonic Budgie wrote: ↑4 years agoKilling Eve Series 2. I'm up to episode 5.
Absolutely fabulous again, everybody in it is superb but Jodie Comer is totally mesmerising.

Re: Bollocks to Brexit
Unless you happen to have close friends among the 300-odd who will decide which candidates to put forward to the 100,000 electors in this Rotten Borough election I don't suppose it really matters. True at one literal level but defeatist. When my grandchildren ask me what i did when the fascists too...

I think it could matter. They are all odious and evil but Boris is further along the road to naked unscrupulous popularism. All of them are likely to deeply damage the country. Boris could also destroy democracy.

Re: Bollocks to Brexit
Heated debate in our house. Being a household of doctors and teachers (well, one of each), Hunt and Gove are held in especial hatred and contempt. But if either of those turns out to have the best chance of stopping Boris, should we not promote them?

Re: Meanwhile...
You know that thing where you are balancing your thirty-something-piece mixed imperial and metric socket set on the edge of the bench in order to replace the one socket you've just used, and the whole things falls upended on the sawdust-covered garage floor, and when you eventually replace them all,...

Whereas I am at Hong Kong airport - 9 hours Melbourne - HK just done, 12 hours HK - Heathrow coming up. Right at this moment, I don't care how beautiful the farther hemisphere of this globe is, I'm planning on confining my pleasure seeking to places a little bit closer

Re: Not how it started out its life
How many miles? I don’t think it owes you anything btw. I don't log all my miles, so there's some guesswork, but I'm estimating 30,000 including all year round commuting, maybe 40,000 if all those short trips to shops etc add up to more than I think :) So I agree it owes me nothing at all. I reckon...

Not how it started out its life
One of the advantages of hub gears , I have learnt, is that the chain can't jump. If it gets to this state, and you are brutal enough just to keep pedalling, it makes funny noises and the occasional jerk but it keeps going. Not that I'm recommending it....

Oh no!! We are flying to Fiji that day to visit no. 1 son. The weather forecast shows a bit of rain but not too stormy. And thinking about it, Friday is when we leave UK, so arriving Sunday. And to think that when I took early retirement two months ago, I was basking in the thought of never having ...

Re: Bollocks to Brexit
So, a question that we were discussing in our house yesterday. What is our objective? Is it to win (Britain remains in EU) with the other side losing? And their objective is to win with us losing? So either way a fight to the finish with roughly half the country losing? Or is there an objective to w...

Re: Bollocks to Brexit
It is an assault, but a very British one, one that doesn't cause any actual hurt. Yes, on the one hand, we should not approve of any assault, with the terrible example of Jo Cox of where it can lead. On the other hand, our democracy is failing, fascist tendencies are in open ascendancy, the values t...
