Yes, it was much closer to Pero's bridge. There's talk of the statue and placards being displayed in the museum, which feels about right to me. Perhaps it could be displayed horizontally, in a tank of water.
ETA: it's just occurred to me that its current location is another bit of symmetry - Pero was a slave brought to Bristol in the 1700s.

Mellow day indoors today, listening to some great radio (Radio 4): 3pm, an absolutely spellbinding adaptation of John Berger's book 'A Fortunate Man', superficially an account of a country GP's life but also a meditation on health and doctoring that didn't falter once. Then later 'Political Thinking', a most interesting interview with Prof Neil Ferguson by <spit> Nick Robinson.
