Scene: A sunny morning, quiet road, normal width, no traffic at all except for my friend and me riding along side by side chatting.
A car appears behind us, hoots twice, overtakes us quite slowly and safely, hooting all the while.

Me: <waving and smiling sarcastically> "HAVE A NICE DAY!"
Car brakes to a stop in front of us.
I ride round to the open driver's window.

Me: "Is something wrong?"
Him: "Yes. ... Taking up half the road when it's not very wide."
Me: "Oh. Did you get past OK?"
Him: ... ... "Yes."
Me: "Well, sod off then."

Car drives off.

Had it been a slow-moving car, he would have overtaken it without a second thought. <gnashes teeth>

Is that your bike, Joan? That's really shit (not the bike, obvs; the theft!).

My beautiful Brooks with tens of thousands of km on it, thus irreplaceable.

.... and nearly broken in. <Boom-tish>

I 'liked' that for the excellent gag. I'm sorry the bastards got your beloved Brooks.

Here's a ........At times like this, Dr Reg would prescribe a nice double gin and fatline tonic.....and that usually works for me.

We are in Porlock for a few days with the family. So I put the Brompton in the boot of the car (as one does). I’d hesitate to climb Porlock Hill even on my full size solo, so relative sanity has prevailed, and i’ve just been up the toll road and down Porlock Hill. I did manage to freewheel down the upper bits of the moor faster than I think i’ve ever taken a Brompton before, and I did produce a rather pungent burnt rubber smell coming down the steeper bit, but the tyres seem somehow to have survived...

Porlock Hill was the site of the only place I heard my father swear, ever. We were going down it in the Moris Minor when, on going round a bend, found the road blocked by someone who had been forced to admit defeat towing a caravan. They were unhitching the van, turning it around by hand before turning the car round, squeezing past the van to reattach. "Bloody idiot" was the phrase that passed his lips.

Well, yesterday’s sanity soon wore off, so this evening I did that loop the other way - up Porlock Hill, in a series of 100 m sprints interposed with prolonged heart rate recovery rests. But the reward was the most gloriously beautiful late afternoon sunshine up on the moors imaginable. I am a happy bunny at peace with the world.

Looks lovely. Oxford was also bathed in sunshine. I managed 27 miles on my Nomad

Lovely sunny 40 miles today, with a coffee stop and a lunch stop with beer. I am so lucky to be able to do this! Sorry, but I forgot to take any photos, so you'll just have to take my word for it.

First ride of the New Year... a relatively short 11 miles - primarily off road.

This is Bob* hiding under the M11.

* I now have a male bike - Bob, short for ‘Beast of Burden’.
