Let us take a minute, or ten, to remind ourselves quite how gobsmakingly thick Priti Patel is
It's ok, she's not been put in a job that has any sort of influence or bearing on our justice system.

Fuck no. I prefer my angry sweary rants delivered with wit, panache, style and a liberal dose of jokes.

Media distributors which admit they're publishers, and have a reputation to maintain, tend to use swearing to add piquancy rather than as the main event. It's like the difference between a complex curry made from fresh spices and a Brick Lane Vindaloo made out of a jar.

So Boris's office sent out lots of personalised emails yesterday to people who are certain they have never given their email address to the Conservative Party. People like me. The Information Commissioner's office have been receiving complaints - I have tried but they don't make it easy when the thing you're complaining about is so outrageous it doesn't seem to comply with any of their tick-boxes.

😞 I'm on every spam list but this one.

Which is a pity, because I might have been able to tell where they got the address.

I asked them that. Apparently I gave them it in a doorstep canvass in 2015. Never in a million years would I have done that.

Yeah, which is my point. As I almost always use a unique email address, if they had spammed me I would have a fair idea where they got it. Their lies would be worthless.

(if they had used my "real" jem address, I'd be in the same boat.)

Ugh, but how frustrating. It's a lie you can't really fight. You know you would never have given your email address to a Tory door knocker, but you can't prove it.

Was the email properly personalised? Did it say Dear Ms Rutabaga, .... ?

Yes, but unfortunately my name is in my email address, so addressing me by name is easy. I've only ever had one email address, if I had loads I'd get very confused.

If only there was an expert in the GDPR somewhere nearby....

I'm not that expert, but my memory is that the onus is on the data processor to demonstrate that they've got the proper processes in place. A mass of complaints to the ICO could well trigger an investigation.

A mass? The ICO is, apparently, overwhelmed with them.

Yup. I have got some weird "personalised" emails using that assumption.

You wouldn't be confused by loads of email addresses if (for example) you owned rutabaga.com. You'd know that every email with that domain was meant for you. The details of specific user name are just that, irrelevant details.

I just run two e-mail addresses, one that my family, friends and important contacts have, and one for signing up to junk or short term stuff. It keeps the noise down on my main account.
