I don't actually have a charger ... but just before I went to sleep last night I was looking online at non-Amazon places that might be able to deliver me one.

Because I used to live somewhere a bit rural, I think of a battery charger as an essential bit of equipment; I had several but have given them away now as I don't have a car any more.

At one time I had an amazing battery box that would jump-start the van and pump up its tyres as well if required, but unfortunately I didn't understand that if you don't keep the box itself charged it will eventually be just useless scrap. Tricky things, batteries.

Yeah - my father had a battery charger and used it as a matter of routine, but we've become so used to reliability of modern batteries I've never felt the need to bother before. One of the many things that a previous generation knew better than us and we're now realising and rolling back our supposed progress (like the resurgence of brown paper bags...)

Having a car that has traveled fewer than 5,000 miles in the last three years, I learned the value of a battery charger. The AA made it clear that, if they had to come out for a flat battery again, there would be a fee to pay.

People used to do 'routine car maintenance', but gradually people have come to believe that cars are 'black box' objects that don't require any. On the other hand, I used to have a repertoire of things I could do if my old heaps wouldn't start (checking for a spark, use the button under the solenoid, emery board between the points …) none of which are any use at all now.

Yes, Saturday mornings, after breakfast, go and check the Morris Minor. Tyres, oil, lights, battery, windscreen wash, brake fluid.
Come to think of it, we do that at work. The first person to use a car each week is supposed to do all that, and clean it if necessary.

If it really was a Morris Minor you probably had to top up the dashpot as well, but I bet hardly anyone knows what that is now.
