Re: Twitter watch

Twitter trends. Every morning there's a new celebrity name and you have to guess between Dead, Massive Racist or Nonce. Occasionally for a breather it's something different, like Nigel Havers having a suitably posh drawing room on Zoom.

Re: In the news...

Both cut-and-dried cases of Driving Whilst Black. The police have that arsey defensive tone and aggressively circuitous logic about them in these situations because they actually believe that racial profiling is just fine and dandy and are really pissed off at having to pretend they don't do it.

Re: Covid-19 Pandemic Thread

Some good news. Michael Rosen is well enough to Tweet again. This cheers me up immensely.

Re: Small lobbying gains or self delusion?

Having read the latest Cycle, I was prepared to be in a generous mood, and point out (a) that we now know that the new Interim Chief Exec is in fact not only a former London cycle commuter but a Brompton user, and (b) it featured words from Chris Juden for, I think, the first time since he was sack...

Re: TV/Streaming shows

Is anyone trying the National Theatre Live streaming of theatre shows, or any of the equivalent offerings from other theatres? It doesn't really work for me: theatre shows are designed for the dynamic of a captive audience in a physical place and the shared communication between audience and stage,...

Re: Small lobbying gains or self delusion?

Must it? Even in the 1880s it was actively lobbying and taking action to make cycling accessible and safe for all. https://www.cyclinguk.org/about/history/ctc-history-timeline There's absolutely no contradiction in those two things. The point we were trying to make in Save the CTC was that effectiv...

Re: Covid-19 Pandemic Thread

Winning power. It's pretty flexible as to the way in which it goes about it, and reinvents itself all the time. It usually stands for a mixed economy with overt support for private enterprise, as long as that support doesn't get too much in the way of winning votes. It has a broadly market-led view...

Re: Covid-19 Pandemic Thread

Anyone who asserts that the Conservatives want to fundamentally change the basis of the NHS or restrict what it does really ought to provide some evidence rather than vague assertions. Vague assertions that don't bear any relation to reality are what is wrong with politics, and get found out eventu...

Re: Small lobbying gains or self delusion?

Which tells us that he has the tools to be successful. But at what? This is the point, of course. I'm sure none of us have forgotten that about ten years ago we had a mahoosive and somewhat bitter row about what the organisation is for, and those of us who thought it should act in its members' inte...

Re: Covid-19 Pandemic Thread

Speaking of which, how is Volcano faring in these circumstances, TRR? I can see you're doing quite a bit online, but are you going to survive? Pretty well for now, thanks, John - the little-appreciated upside of never making a profit even when things are good. We're part of what these days is calle...
