Re: Derek Hatton

This was a thread where we were talking about people being accused of being anti-Semitic for making comments that some of us would have been quite happy to make ourselves. So here is the next example. Labour MP Richard Burgon is in trouble for having said: "The enemy of the Palestinian people is not...

Re: TV/Streaming shows

I agree about Bodyguard, I lost patience with it quite quickly. I know he's flavour of the moment, with Line of Duty and all that, but I'm not keen on Jed Mercurio's writing. It all seems a bit overblown and pleased with itself. Because watching Notre Dame burning was too depressing, we caught up o...

Re: Black box insurance

Why the need for 'hard braking'? I don't want to give an exaggerated impression - I'm not going round doing emergency stops all over the place - and the black box seems to agree because overall it gives me greens not ambers or reds for the smoothness of my driving style. However... When I encounter...

Black box insurance

Has anyone else got a black box fitted as part of their car insurance? Following my retirement, we now have to insure our daughter privately, and as she's under 25 the company offer us lower premiums for fitting a black box (even though 99% of the driving is my wife and me not her). Preliminary indi...

Re: Meanwhile...

Dare I ask, was that traditional foie gras, produced by sticking tubes down the animal's throat and force feeding them, or one of the alternative methods where they are tricked into overeating voluntarily?

Re: Meanwhile...

Stansted is absolutely heaving. Obviously everyone decided to take an early flight today. "I don't know if you've tried locating Stansted on a map, But getting there at 5 am is a fecking load of crap. It's a banjax if you try to go by train or underground So a taxi to the arse of the world is more ...

Re: Bollocks to Brexit

That's not what many Europeans would say. As I understand it, the UK was welcomed by countries like NL and Sweden as a pragmatic counterpoint to the more ideological France. In the area of EU regulation I know best, it was the UK that drove change. The latest EU regulatory paper on conduct regulati...

Re: This woman talks a lot of sense

In my thinking, the objective is to get cycling seen as a mode of transport rather than a sporting activity, and as something that you, your friends and neighbours do ,rather than something fit people do. I accept what you both say, that the suggested method (of different terminology) has problems, ...

Re: Bollocks to Brexit

What form of compromise can any remain supporter offer, that doesn't involve leaving? Is it the principle of belonging in Europe that matters or the function? If it's a point of principle, your logic is impeccable, no compromise is possible. If it's about the practical effect, then customs union an...

Re: Bollocks to Brexit

I have become increasingly attracted to Norway+. It seems it would avoid the economic disaster of hard brexit. It leaves us without a say in shaping Europe. But I think we have foregone any moral right to a say, and we never used our say very constructively anyway.

Re: Meanwhile...

When she became a funeral director (he was already vicar) some unkind people muttered about conflict of interest. In fact, she says the main advantage is that she knows that, if all else fails, there's one local vicar who can hardly refuse her request to take a funeral...

Re: Meanwhile...

To celebrate my retirement yesterday, my wife organised a surprise dinner at our local Italian with our local funeral director and her husband, who happens to be the vicar. They brought balloons. So we spent the whole evening talking very loudly in the crowded restaurant about Graham the vicar retir...
