Re: The book thread

I used to really like John le Carre's books, until they got a bit formulaic. He's got a new one coming out, and the Grauniad has printed a clunking excerpt today - a page of dialogue between a father and daughter in which the father uses his daughter's name TEN times in direct speech. No one in real...

Re: Bollocks to Brexit

I like the one in which an elderly gentleman extends his hand with a smile, but when Boris shakes hands the guy says, 'Please leave my town.'

Re: Confessions

I thought the first series of Peaky Blinders was really good - original and attention-grabbing. Unfortunately, like most good ideas, it then got stretched waffffer-thin in order to keep the brand going beyond its natural capacity, became a silly melodrama, and I gave up on it.

I've never eaten a Pot Noodle. I just don't fancy them somehow.

Re: Bollocks to Brexit

I would not automatically favour a bishop any more than I would a rabbi or an imam. I would favour a woman over a man. At the moment, personally I would favour Caroline Lucas to set things up and get the ball rolling.

Re: TV/Streaming shows

On a different note, is anyone else sickened by Ford's latest ad campaign, in which a child is filled with wonder and delight on discovering their latest car in a leafy wood, being actually constructed out of actual butterflies? Cynical load of bollocks.

Re: TV/Streaming shows

Doco on BBC2 right now built around the testimonies of the women assaulted by Harvey Weinstein. I watched that, it was sobering stuff and very well put together. The review in the Guardian this morning says everything I would want to say about it. Edit to add link: https://www.theguardian.com/tv-an...

Re: Bollocks to Brexit

In Brighton we had a women's singing circle marching along chanting "We are the Rees-Mogg Haters", and also a version of a creaky old Pink Floyd anthem: We don't need no prorogation, We don't need no thought control, No dark sarcasm in the chamber, Boris, leave our votes alone. All in all, you're ju...

I recall its bad luck to plant it as it takes over the garden.
That's why I'm planting it in a pot!

Re: Meanwhile...

I've not heard that one. Someone told me once that if parsley grows well in a garden it means the woman of the house is in charge, and also that it's bad luck to give someone a knife (they have to give you a coin in return), but as I'm not superstitious I just laughed at such nonsense.

Re: Meanwhile...

I can't quite believe I have done this, but I just bought a mint plant. In my defence it was reduced to a quid, but it felt rather like buying a weed. I am going to plant it in a big pot, so I can make mint tea in a little glass infuser from China that I got from a charity shop.
