Re: TV/Streaming shows
Nostalgia in lockdown has got the better of me. I don't do streaming, but I have a dvd player, and am midway through the entire run of The Good Wife. To be followed by Six Feet Under.

Re: Covid-19 Pandemic Thread
I can't 'like' that post, Sonic, but I agree with it. Now that there are hospitals that are, apparently, cleaned-down covid-free zones, and people are being encouraged to resume work, school, and using public transport, I really hope the health service starts to pick up seeing those who have been wa...

Re: TV/Streaming shows
I sat down to watch Gravity tonight, but I'm afraid I only managed 20 minutes. Very dull. I just didn't care what happened to them, unfortunately.

Re: Covid-19 Pandemic Thread
Well done, Sonic. At least some routine surgery seems to be being done. I have personal experience that some clinics round here are simply closed, no one is being seen, and the wait for routine but life-changing surgery now stands at at least a year :-(

Seen on Twitter:
"People weren’t able to drive during lockdown so I’ve written an algorithm to send speeding tickets to random drivers based on historic speeding records in their area."

Re: In the news...
They don't. And it's me that has worked in insurance, not John. There is no perfect system for assessing student performance, and if memory serves statistical normalisation of grades is a routine part of exam marking, to minimise the risk that this year's exam and last year's are radically differen...

Re: In the news...
Think back to all those times in your own life when you have waited for a result or a judgement, from the trivial to the crucial, then ask yourself which statistical analysis or algorithm would have made you happy to learn that your personal result depended on factors like how many people succeeded/...

Re: What the heck were Ofqual supposed to do?
If it's a fact that teacher predictions are optimistic, and if it's a fact that they are more optimistic for disadvantaged pupils, is there any algorithm they could have used that would not produce the effects now being criticised? Such an algorithm doesn't exist, in my opinion; teachers' assessmen...

Re: This made me angry
Do you think it's really possible for any of us to be entirely "not racist" though? For me, like a lot of people I think, it's a constant process of education, learning to unlearn some deeply engrained attitudes acquired by a kind of osmosis throughout my childhood and adolescence from my father, wh...

Re: Covid-19 Pandemic Thread
This is an awful read. The situation for these social housing tower-dwellers looks absolutely dire, in terms of food distribution and communication at the very least. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2020/jul/07/they-change-the-rules-confusion-reigns-for-frightened-and-stressed-melbourne-p...
