Re: Covid-19 Pandemic Thread

I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't do the Thursday clapping for the keyworkers thing; it seemed a weird idea to me and I always wondered how many of the people out there applauding had voted in ways that have undermined the NHS over recent years. This project, on the other hand, is a fanta...

Re: Covid-19 Pandemic Thread

I saw that and looked for a population pyramid for Africa There is one on Page 17 of https://www.uneca.org/sites/default/files/PublicationFiles/demographic_profile_rev_april_25.pdf I can’t seem to link to the graph itself but the numbers in the quote you give do seem roughly right Most Africans do ...

I've not sen that stat, and can't help you with unpicking it, although it's very interesting and possibly rather troubling. But I did want to say that it's been rather quiet here of late and it's nice to see you Ruta :)
Thank you, Sonic, good to see you here too. I hope you are well.

Re: Covid-19 Pandemic Thread

I have seen it said (elsewhere on the interwebs) that there are very few cases of Covid19 "in Africa" because "most Africans are under 21. Only 3 percent are over 60". Anyone feel like picking that apart?

Re: Buying an ex-rental car

Sorry Mr P, I'm only breaking the silence to say that I have been out of the car-owning world for years now, so the anxiety about future unexpected repair/MOT shocks/bills is something I'm very glad to be liberated from. Having said that, I'd have thought the dealer should have been honest about the...

Re: Covid-19 Pandemic Thread

@Regulator did you hit "edit" instead of "reply"? Not much to add, except some services will be a long wait under the NHS. There is a huge wait for ophthalmological treatments across London. I know someone paying for her own cataract surgery in North London, and Chelsea & Westminster are rescheduli...

Re: Covid-19 Pandemic Thread

So if someone needed surgery (life-changing but not life-saving), but the NHS waiting list, for understandable reasons, was a year or so, but there was the option to go private except that it would mean a big credit-card debt and going against deepy-held principles, what would you do? (Asking for a ...

I loved Six Feet Under. I have favourite deaths.
And it had the best opening sequence and music. I didn't see all that many after the first series, so I'm really looking forward to winter evening viewing.

Re: Meanwhile...

Radio 4 is serialising a reading of Elena Ferrante's new book The Lying Lies of Adults. I've not read any of her stuff, although I've heard radio readings and dramatisations - it seems OK, although I can't see what people get so excited about really. Unfortunately the current reading is ruined for m...
