In the little country town of Tallangatta in Victoria, Australia, there was a flea bitten motel named Travelodge. Google suggests it is gone now, but the owner travelled overseas, thought "that's a good name for a motel" and used it when he opened his business. Years later, Travelodge opened in oz, but they could not make him cease using the name, because they had not trademarked it when he started using it.

I hope the reason it's gone is because he took the big bucks, but who knows? I could ask my Tallangatta correspondent, but he would probably find that a weird question as we haven't spoken for 20 years.

I had a colleague who liked to write letters to big businesses of a wind up nature. He got a cease and desist addressed to Ken Tuckey about his proposed chicken business.
