National Poetry Day

Post by Rutabaga » 5 years ago

It's National Poetry Day today, apparently. To celebrate it I am going to an illustrated talk tonight by the guy who made recordings of Laurie Lee reminiscing in 1994, just before Lee died. Did anyone not do Cider With Rosie when they were at school? I'm expecting an evening of lovely corny nostalgia.

One of my favourite books. Enjoy the evening. My favourite poem is Under Milk Wood. I never tire of reading it.

My problem (well, one of them) is that end up liking poems I shouldn’t.

The politics/social reinforcements of There’s a breathless hush/ Miss Joan Hunter Dunn / If... ought to be anathema to me, but I just can’t resist loving the language and the construction.

I think it's OK to admire the construction without accepting wholesale the constructor's intentions - that applies to most if not all art forms, no? I've just enjoyed an exhibition at Tate Modern composed of art made during the Weimar Republic by those the Nazis condemned as 'degenerate'. Some people wouldn't and won't listen to Wagner because of his anti-Semitism.
