Securing your bike with velcro.

Post by Joan » 5 years ago

I usually use a D-Lock, but sometimes take a hiplok instead. Hiploks are chains you can wear but you don't lock them around your waist, you thread a velcro strap through the padlock, so you don't need to call the fire brigade with jaws of life if you are separated from your keys.

I went out a couple of weeks ago with my new bike, and having now way to attach anything to the frame, looped the hiplok around my waist. Fine, at the first stop, I unhooped it from my waist, and locked it up securely. The next stop wasn't far, so instead of wearing it, I just closed the velcro and looped the lock over the handle bars. When I got to my next stop, a Tesco extra where the bike parking is well away from the doors, I just undid the padlock, looped it around my frame and the bike stand, and locked to padlock. The padlock was thus only attached to one end of the chain, the other end was "secured" by the velcro waist strap.

Luckily it was still like that when I returned to discover my error.

Any other tales of locking failures? Hopefully with equally happy endings 🤞
