Not how it started out its life
Not how it started out its life
One of the advantages of hub gears , I have learnt, is that the chain can't jump. If it gets to this state, and you are brutal enough just to keep pedalling, it makes funny noises and the occasional jerk but it keeps going. Not that I'm recommending it....

I like the way that you can wear it into the ring of holes, and get another cog.

I don't log all my miles, so there's some guesswork, but I'm estimating 30,000 including all year round commuting, maybe 40,000 if all those short trips to shops etc add up to more than I think So I agree it owes me nothing at all.
I reckon much of the bending over of the teeth, and the one that broke off, were in the last 200 miles. That was when it started sounding and feeling really dodgy. But as those miles were on tour in France, I just kept going (and spun frantically in two gears lower than usual, which was probably good for me).
