Serial numbers and records

Post by JohnToo » 3 years ago

From one of those "100 years ago today" columns in newspapers, I learnt that this week was the 100th anniversary of the verdict on the "green bicycle" case (Wikipedia has an account) - a lady cyclist murdered, and circumstantial evidence pointing at a gentleman cyclist she had met on that day's ride.

The accused attempted to dispose of his bicycle by throwing it in a canal, and before doing so, he filed off the serial number on both the frame and the seat lug. When it was retrieved, the police found he'd missed a serial number on the inside of the fork, and using this, they located the shop who had sold it to him nine years previously, and they identified him as the buyer.

I'm not sure that could happen today in several respect :)
