The times are changing

Post by JohnToo » 3 years ago

Bob Jackson are closing, and Dawes are ceasing the Galaxy (although the allure of the Galaxy faded years ago in all honesty).

On the other hand, apparently the new CUK CEO has been spotted cycling with a single pannier, so there is hope yet.

The oldest bicycle shop is Pearson Cycles in Sutton, London, UK, which began operating in c.1860 as a wheelwright and continues as a bicycle shop to the present day. (2012)
Closed. The shop is now a different cycle store, and Pearson's still has a store in Sheen, near Richmond Park, so probably better suited to their high end products. But a sad day.

Bugger. When I was a kid, Pearsons in Sutton was our second LBS. I wasn't a cyclist then, but i tagged along when my big sis was bought her new bike there. They had a clock made from sprockets and bike chain which mesmerized my young and innocent self.

Just to be pedantic, Howes Cycles in Cambridge was the oldest cycle shop in the UK (opened in 1840 - 20 years before Pearsons):

It closed in 2013, after 173 years in the same family and in the same shop.

It is now a trendy bar...

Take it up with Guinness Book of Records.

Though I bet someone did. The GBR is not a huge money maker anymore, so by the time it came up for review, Howes Cycles might have closed so even though the original record was inaccurate, time had fixed it.

I wonder what shop will pick up this honour? Moore's Cycles in Twickenham and Teddington have been there at least 20 years

Two candidates:

I don't know if they've always had branded retail outlets, but if so Raleigh (1880s) might have some sort of a claim.

All the candidates seem to have relocated. Pearson's have done that too, still being run buy male descendents of the founder.
