What does it take for sub-editors to give cars/drivers agency in a collision

Not cycling, but still important.

What does it take for sub-editors to give cars/drivers agency in a collision

I've got exercised on other sites about news reports (I'm looking at you, BBC) using language like "A cyclist died when his bicycle collided with a car", but with this terrible tragedy in Penge, ES has raised the bar in blaming the blameless: Eight-month-old baby boy dies one week after collision between pram and car

You are so right. And from a subbing pov, "Car hits pram" takes fewer words than "collision between pram and car", which is usually a sub's raison d'etre.

It's carnage around here today, with cars apparently going wildly out of control all over the place and ending up on top of other cars or on the far side of people's gardens. The police advice to "drive safely and always wear a seatbelt" is particularly touching, I thought. The headline on the first article explains how a four-car "pile-up" has "caused traffic". So now we know.
