How to set up a club web page?

Post by Rutabaga » 7 years ago

Possibly foolishly, I have agreed to look into setting up a web page for a cycling club that hasn't got one at the moment. It would just be a single page to begin with, with text and a couple of photographs and a rides list that can be updated by the webmaster (me) and no one else. Preferably free. I have been looking at free hosts online, but maybe someone on here has done this or knows the easiest way to go about it? All suggestions/pitfalls/shortcuts gratefully received. Ta!

If you don't intend to buy a url, wix is pretty good for free. Took only a couple of minutes to set this up

(url is somewhat configurable but will still be clumsy.)

If you have or intend to buy a domain, I could probably make a little space available for a small low traffic site.

Thanks Joan. I can see this is going to be a steep learning curve.

if you know what domain name you want, now is a good time to buy it. I've just bought a domain name and google took me to a sale from a company with good ratings and apparently excellent customer service. Their normal price for domains .COM, .UK, .CO.UK, .ORG.UK or .ME.UK, .NET, .ORG, .EU and .INFO is £5.95-£10 but if you follow the link I got from a google search you snap one (or more) up for 0.95p. Next year you would have to pay the full price to keep it.

It seems very genuine and it is very cheap.

If you were going to only build a 1 page website, this is all the money you would need to spend for the first year. Just build a website for free on Wix, and then point your new domain name to it.

It said there were 47 left when I started buying a domain, and there were 46 at the end of the process. I believe when their gone, it will be back to at least £5.96.

Well, for good or ill, I have constructed a simple page and am waiting for the committee to ok it. The name will cost 99p the first year, but the hosting isn't free. I have yet to determine the exact cost, but I think it will be affordable. At the moment it's in Wordpress, but I am guessing I could change that or move the page to a different host at some point. I found the process extremely difficult, coming to it cold. My tech skills don't amount to much (nor do I wish them to, really), but it was a case of, if I didn't do it no one would.

@Joan I have sent you a PM on this - have you stumbled across it yet, I expect you are really busy at the moment?
