Re: Bollocks to Brexit
According to Wikipedia, the method of picking was changed in 2007, so has only been used once.
In "peacetime" it's possible that they could all agree behind closed doors who the new speaker will be and then it could be the Tories "turn". But I don't think that's possible at the moment, so the rules of nomination and 50%+ vote are going to be needed.

Re: Bollocks to Brexit
Doh! My assumption was based on Leadsom saying they would field a candidate against him, so assumed he would stand as Labour.
The underlying factor is I am confusing the Commons speaker with the House of Representatives (Australia or USA). The speaker is typically a member of the ruling party (which would have been labour when Bercow ascended).
But if it's Labour's "turn", can you imagine Boris ceding that? No, it's going to be balls to wall rules following.
Ugh. I can't at this second think of a more Orwellian phrase than European Research Group.

Re: Bollocks to Brexit
I seem to recall that it alternates between the two parties rather than someone not of the ruling party. In either case it would be labours turn. even if the conservatives wanted to change that, they might struggle to force a partisan speaker on the house.

It doesn’t. It used to but the rules changed post-Michael Martin. Now it’s a proper election.Whiskeyjack wrote: ↑4 years agoI seem to recall that it alternates between the two parties rather than someone not of the ruling party. Re: Bollocks to Brexit
The current rules require a 50% majority, we means it will require cross party agreement amongst - presumably - the non-Boriskivites. It's quite clear Boris and co are completely in capably for making parley. So it's going to be someone that the Lib Dems, Labour and ousted Tories can all live with. We might end up with someone good. We might end up with Harman.
