Wine, Gin and the Finer Things in Life.

(Started so as not to gatecrash the beer thread).
If anyone is interested, Waitrose have their Chateau Musar back in stock. I’ve picked up a bottle of 2003 vintage for £27.99 (paid for by work as a ‘thank you’ for going the extra mile).
Well worth it... even Mr R (who gets the vapours paying more than £10 a bottle) grudgingly agrees that you get what you pay for.

We had a delicious bottle of the 2004 the other night. A snip at 40 Omani Reals, plus 17% rich bastard tourist tax, at our mountaintop retreat. Took us right back to Al-Shami in Jericho back in the early 90s.

It's a spectrum, isn't it - at one end is someone bragging about how much cheap food they have managed to 'snag' for almost nothing on the yellow sticker run, and at the other end ...

I bought some Christmas blend coffee the other day. I have yet to detect the promised notes of cinnamon, chocolate, dried fruits, and mince pie.

I've had some. Nice - but not worth £60 a bottle for a fairly bog standard craft gin.
I did ask the boss what might happen if I got a bottle of
Morus LXIV on expenses rather than the Chateau Musar. His response was a picture:

It was nice, but i think that was down to the way they served it, i.e. a proper measure, in a cut crystal highball, not much ice with a sprig of rosemary and dried orange peel with poncy Fentemans (natch). I reckon Standard Daily Quaffing gin (Tesco own brand - 1.5 litre) could taste much the same if I could be bothered.

And some of the people who don't mind spending money on luxury are the same people who are delighted to grab a bargain, yellow sticker or otherwise.

Of course. But the scorn heaped on the yellow stickering mostly focused on amazement that anyone would find it remotely interesting.

Part of my retirement present was a bottle of Hepple Gin. A bit flowery for me so I promptly purchased a favourite of mine, small batch Seaside Gin by The Edinburgh Gin Company.
Must get some Ginger Ninja and some Belgian Steam Gin for Xmas.

And to wrap up the Musar - earlier in the year we tasted the '99 at our local Majestic's Fine Wine tasting evening. Extraordinary stuff. If anyone buys wine at Majestic regularly I'd recommend the Fine Wine evening - it's a £20 ticket, for which you get half a dozen very interesting wines to drink (typical bottle price - £40 or so) and a £20 voucher to redeem against a £60 spend. So it's a free way to get plastered (several of the attendees at our evening were driving, and they can't leave empties). And it proves that it is possible to tell the difference between a £10 bottle, a £20 bottle and a £50 bottle.
