Dicking ~= provocative maintenance, that is, taking something that works, and noodling™ with it until it stops working.In this case, I decided to upgrade the like extension to the latest version. The latest version didn't work at all. Just a cross where the heart should be (I think I am writing a country song!) So I reverted to the older version. It turns out the db had changed, so instead of missing hearts, you just got a page full of php/sql errors.
Luckily I had a backup of the database too, so that was - eventually - fixable.
So, an hour's work to get back to where I started.
