Keyboard shortcuts. Ctrl-I = italics, Ctrl-B = bold etc.

Yes, I agree. First attempt, I only found an out of date extension. I will have another look before giving up.

You need to be in full editor mode (ie click "full editor and preview" or "post reply" or "new topic"). The shortcuts are accessed via ALT- in Chrome and IE/Edge, and ALT-SHIFT- in Firefox. Not sure about Macs.
