I am watching lederhosen clad English lads in an oompah band playing Take On Me, because.... Christmas?

Our Nine Lessons and Carols last night. Our statutory Rutter was "I wonder as I wander", which, because it's only his arrangement of a traditional Appalation number rather than his original, may not irritate those of you who are irritated by Rutter quite as much as usual. A new fast number "make we joy now" from this year's OUP compilation of new items, by a local composer who sang it with us. Our "let's be just slightly quirky" number was "follow that star" by Gitton, which makes the tenors sing lots of doo-be-doos, which, as one of our tenors is a trainee barrister who was middle aged before he was born, did not come entirely naturally (our other tenor is my wife, we're that sort of choir). We called back our daughter from where she works for the final rehearsal only to do the first verse of Once In Royal and to boost the number of people who can reliably hit Gs and As in the descants. The bases, who are of course required by contract never to watch the conductor, only stuffed up a couple of entrances. And finished with a glorious "O Radiant Dawn" which because we do it most years we can almost do justice to.

All in all, a triumphant demonstration of how a mediocre and aging choir can pull the cat out of the bag thanks to clever choices of pieces and judicious augmentation, and lots of flapjacks at rehearsals. And the high point of my musical year.

Dunckel is at work because Dunckel didn't save any of his annual leave to extend Christmas. Dunckel is an idiot.

I'm sorry, I don't. By the I had realised I should take one, they had moved on to that turgid song from The Snowman. But they were not as sexy as my description suggests. 🤭

Luckily they have their own YouTube channel, with 1 subscriber! Which means not even all their mums have subscribed.

I’m working today and tomorrow morning, and then I’m off until 6 January. I’ve also had to carry some leave over, as I’ve been so busy this year I haven’t been able to use it all.

Anyone just watched Masterchef? My butcher's produce, and their chef was on it.

I've been generally avoiding sugar for a few weeks as well as refined carbs and starchy carbs; no artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols; minimum processed food; no more alcohol 'til February etc. You get the picture.

So this morning I went to change a light bulb. It was one of the early low-wattage bulbs, a compact florescent. It has a screw fitting, but I thought it was a bayonet and pushed it in. It broke in my hands and I breathed in a snootful of mercury vapour. I could hear the laughter of the irony pixie ringing in my ears.

Or maybe that was the mercury reaching my brain.
