There must be somewhere in the UK where it isn't January.........perhaps in that fantasy land where Rees Mogg, Boris and Raab live.Joan wrote: ↑5 years agoSo we've done this BYO dinner for a couple of years, but last night is the first time we have opted to adjourn to the afterwards. I feel proud to have withstood the call of the demon drink.
Next test: just got a text from a very old friend from Australia who is in town Thursday and wants to meet for a beer.

Re: Meanwhile...
Right, as supposed, the fix was easy, it just needed a clean and tightening.
However in tweaking the rest of the plumbing to seperate the tap I have caused another joint to weep. This is taking a lot more fixing and I have had to go and buy new parts. Argggh!

If Saturday night is good enough to count as Sunday, then Thursday night is already February.

FTFM
I think it January where they are, but just not the same century.
As corrected above, he's presumably flying out on Thursday. So requires a bigger fudge than that.
More seriously, one of the reasons I am doing it is to make sure I can, so I can't just give up the second doing it is hard.

Re: Meanwhile...
So I fixed it but a bit later the tap started leaking again, and the corrugated waste pipe cracked.
I now have a new tap and a whole new waste system. The tap is fitted, the waste will wait until tomorrow because I need a bit more pipe.
Ikea kitchens are great, but their plumbing stuff is non standard and quite pony. Lesson learned, I now have standard stuff throughout.

Mr R had wine with his lunch. He had a bottle of wine with his dinner. He’s now sat with a beer.Joan wrote: ↑5 years agoSo we've done this BYO dinner for a couple of years, but last night is the first time we have opted to adjourn to the afterwards. I made do with fizzy water and coffee. It’s hard doing Janvier Sec when in la belle France.

Anyway. This afternoon we went to see The Favourite - personal and political intrigue in the court of Queen Anne. Olivia Colman is outstanding, as she is in anything she does. Stylish, entertaining, complex, provocative - the sort of film I enjoy. And the music choices are entertaining - even if the first intrusion of Messiaen was surprising after lots of Handel and near offer. Whoever put the score together has a good ear and a deep knowledge. My favourite moment, and laugh-out-loud funny was the queen's ball, where baroque dancing (to Handel's Birthday Ode for Queen Anne, it turned out) meets disco. I recognise that sense of humour might be a little niche.

I agree Colman was good in The Favourite, but not that she’s good in everything she does -I don’t think she’s particularly suited to her current role in the BBC Les Mis.Iris wrote: ↑5 years agoAnyway. The strongest point of The Favourite is the ever shifting power balances between three strong female leads. But we thought it was a little bit too tricksy in places. The unusual camera angles and lenses that were constructively provocative at the start palled a bit by the end, and we didn’t really see what the chapter headings added.
We caught up on Calvary with Brendon Gleeson from a couple of years ago last night. Very dark and disturbing but we’re not sure that they got the ending quite right.

Re: Meanwhile...
The camerawork in 'The Favourite' made me feel sick!
I saw 'Colette' yesterday, it was very entertaining. Judging by the photographs of the real Colette and her entourage at the end it was a very faithful impersonation, but it was really a bit of a lightweight look at someone far more interesting than the film implies. I enjoyed it very much though.

Survived. I matched his beers for coffee then water. Finished with a curry. *oh, there's a curry emoji ! *. I got louder and more frank as the evening progressed. I am starting to think alcohol has no effect on me whatsoever.
