My niece and her partner had an engagement party this evening, the happy couple were having a great time. I took a pic of the family and with permission posted it on facebook, my sister replied to the picture which was when I discovered she wasn't invited.

This is the circumstance for which the word awkward was invented.

She would not have gone anyway and she has been quite clear about her feelings for our brother's daughters so fair enough she wasn't invited. Families aren't perfect but sometimes you just have to grit your teeth and go along with it.

Oh, phew. When you said "sister", I read "niece's mum".

Random aunts can be snubbed.

(I had 32 first cousins. My parents were not invited to any engagement parties and only some of the weddings. This was practical, not snubbing.)

My step-Godfather has died. I don't know if "step-" is right: he was married to my Godmother.

Anyway, vale Barney.

Aside: which is creepier?
  1. Learning about his death through Twitter.
  2. Finding his Wikipedia page has been updated immediately
  3. Realising the updater is a mutual friend of the mine and the dead man's oldest child.
  4. In his haste to update it, he got date of death wrong.
  5. That Wikipedia page is a stub: surely he could have added some details about his achievements while alive, rather than just getting the scalp for chronicling his death.

Note to self: wait a few days, then add some facts to Barney's Wikipedia page.

Or may be Uncle Barney? That's what we had to call my parents' friends and somehow, even though I'm in my 60s and some uncles and aunts are over 90, things have never changed.

Sorry to hear about his death, RIP Barney.
