So what do people make of this? Does the packaging matter at all when it comes to experiencing fine wines?

Goodness....my first reaction is one of horror. It does not look right. I wonder if it’ll affect the taste. Perhaps if we walked or cycled to the off-licence and recycled all our old glass bottles, we’d make more of a contribution to the environment.

I think it's more to do with the reduction in space for transporting the stuff. I'd have thought it would be possible to make the flat bottles in glass, rather than plastic, which might address the recycling issue but would add to transportation weight of course.

Hmmm. Not sure what I think. Those flat bottles are brilliant on the shelf, but terrible at the table. You;d have to pinch them between your thumb and fingers to pour, and a they'd be very unstable on the table. I suspect I would spill more than I'd drink.
I don't think they could make it from glass. The flat bottle would have more surface area the cylinder, so it would require more glass - and I've noticed those 1/2 bottles of spirits seem to have thicker glass than normal bottles, so it might even need twice as much glass as a normal bottle. It wouldn't be letterbox slim then. If you were going to use glass, it probably would have to be more like a normal bottle, but with a square cross section.
I'm not sure it has a huge advantage over château cardboard.

If I recall correctly (and I may be wrong) glass is also more repeatedly recyclable than plastic - and takes less energy to recycle....
...and plastic just doesn’t make the same embarrassing noise as you pour the bottles into the recycling bin.

I would like to recommend the M&S Small Batch No2 London Dry Gin. It’s made with Seville Orange peel and, whilst not as ‘in yer face’ orangey as Tanqueray Sevilla, it is very pleasant. Hopefully available at an M&S near you.

Tonight might be the night for me, the tonic is in the fridge. Yesterday I invested in a very nice brass jigger, it would be a shame not to use it.

I’m settling down with my first G&T of the weekend, made with Explorers Gin from the Downton Distillery. I can thoroughly recommend it.
